A senior Burundian official said Thursday that the country is ready to welcome at least 37,000 Burundian refugees living in Tanzania. First Vice-President Therence Sinunguruza told MPs at the Parliament's Lower Chamber, or the National Assembly, that the government is ready to welcome, before the end of this year, the nearly 40,000 refugees now living in Tanzania's Mitabila Camp.
"We've taken all necessary measures to welcome those Burundian brothers and sisters. It's in this framework that existing transit sites in provinces bordering Tanzania including Makamba and Rutana have been rehabilitated to welcome them," said Sinunguruza during the presentation of the achievements of ministries under his coordination during the last six months.
Sinunguruza said the Solidarity Ministry has taken appropriate measures to facilitate the repatriation of those Burundian refugees.
According to him, upon arrival, returnees will each get food and non-food items as well as 50,000 Burundi francs (33 U.S. dollars) to assist them during the first days of arrival.
Sinunguruza also said that the ten ministries he coordinates have done well during the last semester, stressing however that challenges related to lack of funds jeopardized the implementation of some programs.(Xinhua)
