Masaai Mara International marathon champion Nicholas Kipkemboi secured
the ninth edition of the UAP Ndakaini half marathon, in Muranga
County
Kipkemboi who was placed second in the Safaricom Gusii Golden series
in Gucha breasted the tape at 1:04.41, two seconds shy of the course
record set by Dennis Kipruto last year.
Bristol marathon and Venice 21km champion Peter Kimeu was edged to
second spot by returning 1:06.41 as Vincent Cheruiyot settled for the
last podium finish spot in a time of 1:06.47.
In the women’s category, Klap tot Klaploop (Netherlands) 10km and 12km
runner Christine Chepkemei clinched the race by stopping the timer at
1:17.02.
Cross country runner Gladys Chemweno settled for the runners up spot
by clocking 1:17.26 with Agnes Jepkosgei coming in third in a time of
1:18.60.
Each of the winners in the men and women’s races took home Ksh 150,000
cash prizes.
Peter Mateelong a younger brother to the Olympics 10,000m bronze
medalist Richard Mateelong clocked 30:21.98 to win the men’s 10km
race ahead Bernard Mureithi (32:55.40) as Kiplimo Mitei was third by
clocking 33:23.56.
Pascacia Chepkorir won in the women’s category by timing 38:34.22 as
Beatrice Cherop was placed second in a time of 39:56.70 with Pauline
Wanjiku finishing in third place by clocking 40:39.00.
The winners in this category took home Ksh 15,000 cash prize while
the first and second runners up were awarded Ksh 10,000 and Ksh 8,000
respectively.
Mateelong said he was using the event to prepare for the forthcoming
cross country championships.
The UAP Ndakaini half marathon has in the past been used by runners to
hone their skill, many of who have proceeded to successful
international athletic careers.
Proceeds from the marathon are used in conservation efforts around the
dam. Since the inception of the marathon, UAP has planted a total of
90,000 indigenous trees in the Ndakaini area with a targeted 250,000
trees set to be planted.
The Ndakaini area also offers great potential for tourism and
commercial activities. With its scenic environment and easy access
from Nairobi, Ndakaini is well positioned to become a new destination
for visitors who would like to experience the beauty of the area or
participate in environmental efforts.
It is envisioned that Ndakaini marathon will provide an opportunity to
tap into this potential. This way, the marathon will become a pivot
point around which efforts to uplift the commercial standards of the
people living around the area can be harnessed making Destination
Ndakaini a reality.
